A lot of people have guns, but do we really need laws to decide what we do with them? With the amount of horrible things that have happened with guns in the past like shooting there are strong beliefs that we should have restrictions. The definition of gun control is when there is laws to restrict or limit gun use and sales. This has many real life consequences which resulted in death. A woman by the name of Bonnie Elmasri was one of these victims. She wanted to buy a handgun to protect herself and her kids from her husband. Her husband was abusive and threatened to kill them. She had to wait 48 hours until she could buy a gun, but she was already too late. Her two sons and herself were murdered the next day by her husband. If Bonnie would have been able to buy a handgun, she might have saved her sons and herself.
In Colorado, Chuck Harris, was able to save himself from being killed. Harris was stabbed by three young men and, luckily for him, he managed to grab his pistol and shot the attackers. If Harris would have obeyed the law, he’d be dead. He didn’t have to fiddle with a trigger lock of any kind. According to the study done by Professor John R. Lott, states with laws that allow concealed carry, reduced their murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%. So if the states, in 1992, that didn’t permit concealed carry, did permit it. They would have avoided 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and 12,000 robberies. Also, according to Lotts study, areas that allow concealed carry, have less crime. This is due to the fear in criminals that anyone could be carrying a gun.
Having gun laws was the popular choice after 42 students at Amelia High School were asked “do you think there should be gun laws?’
Jessee Bingaman was asked ” do you think we should have gun laws?’
He replied with ” No, I think it takes away my individual freedom”
Tyler Stewart was asked the same question….
He said ” Yea, I believe there are crazy people out there who shouldn’t even have a gun, let alone not have any rules to follow”
In 1996, Australia, made laws to ban guns and make it illegal to use a gun defensively. Armed robberies rose by 51%, unarmed robberies by 37%, assaults by 24% and kidnappings by 43%. This is just one of many examples of countries that did not benefit from gun control. These facts about the consequences of gun control. The 2nd amendment is a must. It saves lives and protects the citizens of the United States from criminals.
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns (35% of men and 12% of women). America’s gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment, which states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Overall guns can be dangerous in the wrong hands and people need rules to follow, but other parts of this article have proven other wise, what’s your thoughts?
